Development of Prophylactic Bivalent and Quadrivalent Human Papillomavirus ( HPV ) Vaccines : A Review
نویسندگان
چکیده
Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted disease which can infect different parts of the body including uterus. Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer among women worldwide. In 2008, Zur Hausen received the Nobel Prize in “Medicine or Physiology” for proving the causative link between HPV and cervical cancer research. The HPV-related disease appears to be increasing but treatment is limited, difficult and insufficient with high relapse rate. This growth in disease burden had made the development of two an effective prophylactic Human Papillomavirus vaccines namely Gardasil quadrivalent (Merck) and CervarixTM bivalent (GlaxoSmithKline). These vaccines are widely marketed internationally. The different steps and challenges faced during development these vaccines, from exploratory stage to commercialization of vaccines, have been reviewed.

Efficacy of human papillomavirus vaccines: a systematic quantitative review.
Human papillomavirus (HPV) types cause approximately 70% of cervical cancer worldwide. Two vaccines have been recently evaluated in randomized controlled trials: the bivalent vaccine for HPV 16 and 18 (Cervarix, GlaxoSmithKline Biologicals, Rixensart, Belgium) and the quadrivalent vaccine for HPV 6, 11, 16, and 18 (Gardasil, Merck and Co, Inc, Whitehouse Station, NJ). We have performed a system...
متن کاملChapter 13: Current findings from prophylactic HPV vaccine trials.
Early data from randomized controlled trials consistently show that prophylactic human papillomavirus virus-like particle (HPV VLP) vaccines are effective in preventing infection and lesions caused by the targeted HPV type(s). Two vaccines, a bivalent HPV-16/18 VLP vaccine and a quadrivalent HPV-6/11/16/18 VLP vaccine, are currently undergoing evaluation in phase III trials with anticipation of...

OBJECTIVES To compare the effect and cost effectiveness of bivalent and quadrivalent human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination, taking into account differences in licensure indications, protection against non-vaccine type disease, protection against disease related to HPV types 6 and 11, and reported long term immunogenicity. DESIGN A model of HPV transmission and disease previously used to info...
متن کاملCost-effectiveness of different human papillomavirus vaccines in Singapore
BACKGROUND Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines are widely available and there have been studies exploring their potential clinical impact and cost-effectiveness. However, few studies have compared the cost-effectiveness among the 2 main vaccines available - a bivalent vaccine against HPV 16/18, and a quadrivalent vaccine against 6/11/16/18. We explore the cost-effectiveness of these two HPV vac...
